Lot description: ROMAN REPUBLICAN. L. Censorinus. 82 B.C. AR denarius. 4.02 gm. 17 mm. Rome mint. Laureate head of Apollo right / The satyr Marsyas standing left, raising hand and holding wineskin over shoulder; to right, column surmounted by statue of Minerva(?) standing right; L CENSOR downwards to left. Crawford 363/1d. Sydenham 737. RSC Marcia 24. RBW 1372. Good Very Fine; gorgeous deep irridescent toning on fresh surfaces; well centered. Purchased from David Sear. In what might be the greatest parable of hubris, the unusual reverse depicting a naked satyr carrying a wine-skin over his shoulder alludes to the myth of Marsyas, a Phrygian satyr who in a great act of hubris challenged the god Apollo to a musical competition, the winner to get whatever he chose. Apollo won, and chose to skin the satyr alive to make a wineskin. (6th book of Ovid's "Metamorhoses") Estimate: 300 USD |
