ISLANDS OFF CARIA. Rhodos. Rhodes. Circa 88/42 B.C.-A.D. 14. AR drachm. 4.29 gm. 20 mm. Kritiokles, magistrate. Radiate head of Helios facing slightly right / Rose seen from above; corn ear to left below; Ρ - Ο flanking, ΚΡΙΤΟΚΛΗΣ above. Ashton & Weiss 138-151 var. (A36/P- unrecorded reverse die). BMC 337-338 (same obverse die). SNG Keckman 742 (same obverse die). HGC 6, 1456. HN Online 913. Mint State but for minor scuff on obverse cheek. A wonderful and bold three-quarter presentation of Helios. Lustrous and boldly struck in high relief and well centered on an extremely broad flan of wonderful metal. Superb style, reminiscent of portraits of Alexander (and also, to modern eyes, perhaps of Beethoven).
