PONTOS. Amisos. Time of Mithradates VI Eupator. Circa 85-65 B.C. Æ. 18.44 gm. 28 mm. Helmeted head of Athena right, helmet decorated with vine tendril, griffin, and olive leaves / Perseus standing facing, holding harpa and head of Medusa, whose decapitated body lies at his feet; ΑΜΙ-ΣΟΥ and monograms flanking. HGC 7, 238. SNG BM Black Sea 1169-1172. SNG Stancomb 683-686 var. (controls). Good Very Fine; glossy green patina with luminous highlights; typical adjustment marks; well centered on a large flan. Exceptional example of this interesting mythological type, with an especially handsome bust of Athena.
