BAKTRIA, Local issues. Sophytes. Circa 280/78-270 BC. AR Obol (8.5mm, 0.59 g, 6h). Attic standard. Uncertain mint in the Oxus Region. Male head right, wearing crested Attic helmet decorated with laurel wreath and wing on cheek piece / Cockerel standing right; kerykeion (caduceus) to left. Taylor, Birds Group 8.3, 291 = CNG E-399, lot 312 (same dies); Nicolet-Pierre & Amandry –, but cf. 64; Bopearachchi, Sophytes –; SNG ANS –; SMAK pp. 64-70; HGC 12, –. Find patina, corrosion and roughness, delamination on obverse. VF. Very rare denomination.
