Lot description: EPEIROS, Ambrakia. Circa 360-338 BC. AR Stater (19mm, 8.28 g, 2h). Pegasos flying left; A below / Helmeted head of Athena right; shrimp to left. Ravel, Colts 158 (A69/P102); Pegasi 105 (same dies as illustration); HGC 3, 214. Lightly toned, scratches, struck with worn obverse die, roughness on reverse. Near VF. Very rare, only three noted by Ravel (all in public collecctions), one in CoinArchives. From the CJR Collection. Calciati, in Pegasi, also erroneously places this issue at Leukas (Pegasi 115). The drawing of the shrimp on Pegasi 105 at Ambrakia is also incorrect in the text, due to the tail being off the flan on the piece that Calciati illustrates. Estimate: 250 USD |
