Ancient coins
Greece
Asia Minor
Ionia, Phokaia, 478-387 BC, El-Hekte (1/6 Stater), Bodenstedt 66, SNG Cop. 1025, 2.46 g - nicely centered and very rare

The obverse depicts the mythological Phrygian king Midas who ever since Antiquity has been a symbol of human ignorance and greed. He is easily recognizable by having the ears of a donkey "given" to him by Apollo as punishment for having supported Pan in a musical competition with Apollo.
He is today however best known from the legend in which the god Dionysos made Midas' wish come through that everything he touched would be turned to gold. Although he acquires enormous wealth in a very short time it soon became clear that the wish had dire consequences as both his daughter Marigold and everything he tried to eat was transformed into gold.
