Theophilus (AD 829-842). AV solidus (20mm, 4.44 gm, 7h). NGC MS 5/5 - 3/5, edge marks. Constantinople, AD 830/1-840. X *ΘЄOFI-LOS bASILЄ' Θ, draped bust of Theophilus facing, with short beard, wearing crown surmounted by, patriarchal cross in right hand, akakia in left / + mIXAHL S COnStAntIn', draped facing busts of deceased father Michael II (on left), with short beard, and deceased son Constantine (on right), beardless, each wearing crown surmounted by cross; cross in field above. Füeg 3.H.2.z²-³. DOC 3d var. (obverse legend). Sear 1653 var. (same). Extremely rare, with only two examples cited in Füeg with the X before the legend on the obverse. Lovely stylized portraits on lustrous flan with velveteen surfaces.
