| Lot description: Ancients Gordian III (AD 238-244). AV aureus (19mm, 4.61 gm, 12h). NGC MS 5/5 - 4/5. Rome, AD 240-243. IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG, laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Gordian III right, seen from behind / VIRTVTI AVGVSTI, Hercules, nude, standing facing, head right, resting right hand on hip, left hand placed on club set on rock; lion skin draped on left arm. RIC IV.III 108. Calicó 3242. Well-struck and perfectly centered on a glistening honey flan. Ex Heritage Auctions, Auction 3094 (20 August 2021), lot 34244; Collection of GK, Ukrainian Emigrant (Roma Numismatics, Auction XXI, 24 March 2021), lot 678; Classical Numismatic Group, Triton XVIII (6 January 2015), lot 1201. The pose of Hercules on the reverse seems to be modeled on the famous "Farnese Hercules" statue, discovered at the Baths of Caracalla in AD 1546.
