CAES DIC-QVAR, bust of Venus right, wearing pendant earring and stephane, hair rolled and pulled into knot at back of head / COS•QVINC, legend within wreath. Calicó 42. Crawford 481/1. Sydenham 1021. Iulia 30. Evidence of repair, thus ineligible for encapsulation. Nicely centered strike on a broad flan. Ex Numismatica Ars Classica, Auction 63 (17 May 2012), lot 465; Classical Numismatic Group, Auction 45 (18 March 1998), lot 1780. Julius Caesar used the Roman founding myth, memorialized in the Aeneid by Virgil, to link his lineage to Iulus, the son of Aeneas and grandson of Venus.
