Lot description: Ancients Anonymous. After 225 BC. AE aes grave as (77mm, 275.88 gm, 12h). Mint State, as cast. Uncertain Italian mint, Libral Series. Head of Minerva facing slightly right, wearing triple crested helmet / ROMA, bull advancing right, vertical caduceus above. Crawford 37/1c. Sydenham 139. Vecchi 72. HN Italy 331. Thurlow/Vecchi 43a. Extremely rare. No examples in sales archives. Full weight, with complete designs on both sides. Exhibiting a mix of earthy tones from deep green to burgundy. Incredible high relief on both sides as if the coin never saw any use in commerce. Ex Joel Malter & Company, private sale (9 November 1972). Crawford notes on p. 149 "the head of the obverse has certain similarities with the head of Minerva on didrachms of Heraclea." Note that the other type from this issue has an archaic L, the same found on the Luceria victoriatus issues of ca. 211-208 BC. Of the only two specimens of Crawford 37/1a in sales archives, NAC described the coin as Luceria in their auctions (2011 and 2012), and Malter also concluded Luceria when the coin was sold in 1972, whereas CNG chose Rome as the mint in their auction (2024). This cataloger has decided to follow Vecchi, Italian Cast Coinage (2013) and leave the mint as Uncertain for now. https://coins.ha.com/itm/ancients/roman-republic/ancients-anonymous-after-225-bc-ae-aes-grave-as-77mm-27588-gm-12h-mint-state-as-cast/a/3115-31036.s?type=DA-DMC-CoinArchives-WorldCoins-3115-05082024 HID02906262019 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved Estimate: 10000-15000 USD |
