Its location with its large natural harbour, open to Greece, predestined Syracuse to become the leading power in Sicily. Founded by Corinth, with one of the first westward colonisation campaigns (directly following Naxos) around 730 BC, Syracuse retained its Doric tribal character and Doric language until Roman times and maintained close contact with the motherland. The urban centre was located on the small island of Ortygia, where the spring of Arethusa emerged; other territories on the mainland were soon acquired.

We know little about its early history, but Syracuse does not appear to have achieved greater importance until the 6th century BC. The minting of coins did not begin until around 520-510 BC, but then immediately with a large issue of tetradrachms and didrachms in Attic standard currency.
