| Lot description: Vespasian. Denarius; Vespasian; 69-79 AD, Rome, 77-78 AD, Denarius, 3.19g. RIC-978 (R3, pl. 12: this coin). Obv: IMP CAESAR - VESPASIANVS AVG Head laureate r. Rx: Goatherd seated l. milking goat over bowl; in exergue, IMP XIX. The introduction of IMP XIX reverse types for Vespasian suggested that IMP should be eliminated from his current legend, IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG / COS VIII; but on our coin an old obverse die still bearing IMP was apparently mistakenly coupled with one of the new IMP XIX reverse types.
