Tiberius III Apsimar (AD 698-705). AV solidus (19mm, 6h). ANACS MS 62. Constantinople, 8th officina. D tIbЄRI-ЧS PЄ-AV, cuirassed bust of Tiberius III facing, wearing crown surmounted by cross, transverse spear in right hand across front of chest, shield decorated with horseman motif in left / VICTORIA-AVϚЧ H, cross potent on three steps; CONOB in exergue. Sear 1360.

Admiral of a Byzantine seat sent to relieve the siege of Carthage, Apsimar turned back after the Arabs sized the city and undertook to overthrow the feeble Emperor Leontius. He succeeded to the throne as Tiberius III and set about trying to recover the initiative against the advancing Arabs. He scored some minor successes against them in Asia Minor, but Carthage was lost forever, a terrific blow that undermined his claim to military prowess. Rightfully suspicious of the deposed Justinian II, who had taken refuge with the Khazars, he tried to have his rival extradited and executed. But Justinian eluded capture and returned to Constantinople at the head of a polyglot army in AD 705. Caught unprepared, Tiberius tried to flee, but was captured and executed. The scarce coinage of Tiberius shows him as a military man, armed with spear and shield, a motif that had not been seen in decades.

Leontius (AD 695-698). AV solidus (19mm, 6h). ANACS MS 62. Constantinople, 1st officina. D LЄO-N PЄ AV, bust of Leontius facing, bearded, wearing crown with cross on circlet and lozenge pattern loros, akakia in raised right hand, globus cruciger in left / VICTORIA-AVϚЧ Δ A, cross potent with base on three steps; CONOB below. Sear 1331 (unattested officina).

Governor of the newly created Theme of Hellas in Greece, Leontius was proclaimed emperor after the overthrow of Justinian II in AD 695. His first mistake was not executing his predecessor; instead he cut off Justinian's nose and banished him to the Crimea. With the Byzantines in turmoil, the Arabs went on the offensive in North Africa and captured Carthage in AD 698. The fleet Leontius sent to relieve the city instead rebelled and proclaimed its admiral Apsimar as emperor. Leontius abdicated and was initially spared, but was murdered after Justinian II's return to power in AD 705. The coins of Leontius boast unusually realistic portraiture, portraying him as a portly man with a close-cropped beard.

Philippicus (Bardanes) (AD 711-713). AV solidus (19mm, 6h). ANACS AU 55. Constantinople, 2nd officina. D N FILЄPICЧS-MЧL-TЧS AN, bust of Philippicus facing, wearing loros and crown surmounted by cross, globus cruciger in right hand, scepter with eagle surmounted by cross in left / VICTORIA-AVϚЧ B, cross potent on three steps; CONOB in exergue. Sear 1447.

One of a debilitating string of short-lived rulers from the early eighth century, Bardanes was a general of Armenian origins who was proclaimed emperor upon the final overthrow of Justinian II. Almost immediately, he alienated the clergy and populace by reviving the Monothelete heresy (proposing that Christ had a single, divine nature and will) which had supposedly been stamped out decades previously. He was also unsuccessful in stopping Arab and Bulgarian advances, prompting the Byzantine army to depose and blind him after 18 months of ineffective rule. He was replaced by the finance minister Artemius, who reigned as Anastasius II. This extraordinary piece shows the unusually fine artistry employed on the coinage for so ephemeral a reign, showing the emperor holding two symbols of office dating back to Roman times: The globus cruciger and scipio aquila, a scepter topped by an eagle.

Irene, Sole Reign (AD 797-802). AV solidus (19mm, 6h). ANACS MS 62. Constantinople. ЄIRIhH-bASILISSH, bust of Irene facing, wearing loros and crown with pendilia, two pinnacles, and cross in center, globus cruciger in right hand, transverse cruciform scepter in left / •-ЄIRIhH-bASILISSH Θ, bust of Irene facing, wearing loros and crown with pendilia, two pinnacles, and cross in center, globus cruciger in right hand, transverse cruciform scepter in left. Sear 1599.

The brief sole reign of the Empress Irene was a milestone in both Roman and Byzantine history, as it marked the first time a woman ruled the Empire in her own right. Previous empresses had effectively wielded supreme power, but only by using a male figurehead as nominal ruler. An Athenian beauty of renowned intellect, Irene rose to prominence as the wife of Emperor Leo IV. When Leo died in AD 780, Irene ruled as regent for their adolescent son Constantine VI until iconoclast ministers forced her ouster. But when Constantine VI embarrassed the regime with a series of military blunders and public scandals, Irene had him ousted and blinded in AD 797, seizing sole power for herself. She won popularity with generous handouts and tax reductions, but the state's coffers soon emptied and she faced a series of military disasters that further undermined her position. Furthermore, the accession of a female promoted the Pope in Rome to declare the imperial throne vacant and the Frankish king Charlemagne was duly crowned "Emperor of the Romans" in AD 800. He in turn sent Irene an offer of marriage which might have united Eastern and Western Christendom under one government and changed the course of history, but it was not to be: In AD 802 Irene was ousted in a coup led by her finance minister Nicephorus, who exiled her to Lesbos, where she died the following year. Her devotion to icons led to her canonization in the Orthodox Church.
