D N ANASTA-SIVS PP AVG, pearl-diademed, helmeted, and cuirassed bust of Anastasius I facing, head slightly right, with spear in right hand over shoulder, shield decorated with horseman motif in left / VICTOR-I-A AVGGG ∆, Victory standing facing, head left, with grounded jeweled cross in right hand; star in right field, CONOB in exergue. Sear 3.

Anastasius' 27-year rule was a time of apparent stability that masked deep religious divisions; during his reign, the controversy between Monophysites and Chalcedonians over the nature of Christ reached fever pitch. For his entire reign, the elderly emperor was in conflict with the Bishop of Rome over the issue, as Anastasius was an adherent of Monophysitism, which the Pope considered to be heretical. A contemporary bishop, Gregory of Nyssa, described the frenzy of the times: "the whole city is full of it - they are all busy arguing. If you asked something of a moneychanger, he would begin discussing the question of the Begotten and the Unbegotten. If you questioned a baker about the price of bread, he would answer that the Father is greater and the Son is subordinate to Him. If you went to take a bath, the attendant would tell you that in his opinion, the Son simply comes from nothing."
