Lot description: THRACE, Deultum. Diadumenian. As Caesar, AD 217-218. Æ Tetrassarion (23mm, 8.61 g, 7h). Bareheaded and draped bust right, seen from behind / Macrinus standing left, in military attire, holding parazonium and spear; to right, Nike standing left, crowning him with wreath and holding palm frond. Draganov, Deultum 166-9 (O26/R1); Jurukova, Deultum 77; Varbanov 2175 var. (obv. legend). Green patina, pitting, roughness, obverse die shift, minor deposits. Near VF. Rare. From the Deultum Collection. All of the references simply refer to the reverse scene as "emperor standing left" but on the better preserved specimens he is clearly laureate, so the emperor must be Macrinus and not Diadumenian. Estimate: 100 USD |
