Lot description: Caracalla Æ Diassarion of Thuria, Messenia. AD 198-205. AV K M AV ANѠT[...](sic), laureate, draped and cuirassed bust to right / Θ[ΟΥΡΙΑΤѠΝ], Athena standing facing, head to left, holding spear and patera or Nike; Λ-Α across fields. Cf. BCD Peloponnesos 834.3 (patera) & 4 (Nike); cf. BMC 5-6 (patera); NPC p. 65 (patera). 6.02g, 20mm, 9h. Good Fine. The inscription Λ-A (ΛΑΚΕΔΑΙΜΟΝΙΩΝ) on reverse is an evidence that in the time of Severus and his family Thuria formed part of Laconia. According to Pausanias (Description of Greece, IV.31.1): 'Eighty stades on the road which leads thence into the interior of Messenia is the city of the Thuriatae, which they say had the name Antheia in Homer's poems.
