Lot description: Julia Domna (wife of S. Severus) Æ Assarion of Thuria, Messenia. AD 193-217. IOVΛI ΔOMNA CЄBA[CTH AV], draped bust to right / ΘOVPI[ATѠ]N, Tyche, turreted, standing facing, head to left, holding patera and cornucopiae; Λ-Α across fields. BCD Peloponnesos 830.4 var. (S. Severus); BCD Peloponnesos II -; BMC 7 var. (Caracalla); SNG Copenhagen -; Mionnet 66 var. (rudder instead of patera); NCP p. 66 (not for J. Domna). 4.80g, 21mm, 8h. Near Very Fine. Extremely Rare; unpublished and possibly unique. The inscription Λ-A (ΛΑΚΕΔΑΙΜΟΝΙΩΝ) on reverse is an evidence that in the time of Severus and his family Thuria formed part of Laconia. According to Pausanias (Description of Greece, IV.31.1): 'Eighty stades on the road which leads thence into the interior of Messenia is the city of the Thuriatae, which they say had the name Antheia in Homer's poems.
