Lot description: Lydia, uncertain mint (Sardes?) Æ 11mm. 4th century BC. Head of Dionysios to left, wearing ivy wreath / Kantharos; [F] (in Lydian) and S (in Lydian) flanking. Vögtli, Pergamon 524; CNG 100, 1487; CNG E-248, 119 (Syros). 1.46g, 11mm, 11h. Good Very Fine. Privately purchased from Forvm Ancient Coins. The use of Lydian letters has led to the attribution to a mint in Lydia, rather that Cycladic Naxos or Syros which also used similar types. It is likely to be the mint of Sardes as the Lydian spelling of this mint is 'Sfard'. Estimate: 50 GBP |
