Lot description: Tauric Chersonesos, Chersonesos Æ 21mm. Pseudo-autonomous issue, time of Commodus, AD 177-192. ΧЄΡ, Asklepios standing facing, head to left, leaning on serpent-entwined staff; Γ to right / ЄΛЄΥΘЄΡΑϹ, Hygieia standing to right, holding serpent(?) in each hand. RPC IV.1 Online 3719.5 (temporary); Anokhin 279. 3.92g, 21mm, 6h. Near Very Fine. Rare variant. Unlike the other examples of RPC and Anokhin, where it is clear that Hygeia is feeding a serpent from a patera, here it is not clear whether we have the same type or whether the goddess is simply holding a serpent in each hand. Estimate: 40 GBP |
