PTOLEMAIC KINGS of EGYPT. Ptolemy IV Philopator. 222-205/4 BC. AR Tetradrachm (26mm, 13.80 g, 12h). Ptolemaïs (Ake) mint. Struck circa 222-219 and/or 217-205/4 BC. Diademed head of Ptolemy I right, wearing aegis around neck / Eagle, with closed wings, standing left on thunderbolt; ΠTO (mint) monogram to left, erasure mark to right, monogram between legs. CPE 911; Svoronos –; SNG Copenhagen –; . Lightly toned, some horn silver, struck with worn obverse die. VF. Extremely rare, only four noted in CPE, including the one piece in PCO and the one example in CoinArchives (CNG E-244, lot 236, the Shechem hoard coin noted by Carlen).

Head of Athena to right, wearing crested Attic helmet; [symbol] (mark of value?) on cheek / Owl standing three-quarters to right, head facing, olive sprig and crescent behind; AΘE to right. Unpublished in the standard references; cf. Roma E-105, 384 (symbol unclear); for drachms with a clear obv. symbol, cf. CNG 527, 146 & Roma E-106, 403 (uncertain mint); for similar style, cf. Huth 39 (Lihyan). 2.00g, 14mm, 9h.
