Empire of Nicaea. Iohannes III Ducas-Vatatzes, 1222-1254. Hyperpyron (Gold, 24.84 mm, 4.24 g) Magnesia, circa 1232-1254. Second coinage, "early" style. Christ Pantokrator, bearded and nimbate, seated facing on throne without back, wearing tunic and colobium, raising the right hand in benediction, holding the book of Gospels in the left hand, IC XC on top to left and right. Rev. [Ιω ΔЄCΠΟΤΗ Τω] [ΠΟΡ]Φ[VPOΓЄΝΝΗΤω] in two columnar groups, [Μ-Ρ] [ΘV] in upper right field. Iohannes standing facing to left, wearing collar-piece, loros and holding labarum on long shaft in the right hand and akakia in the resting left hand, being crowned with the right hand by the Virgin Mary standing to right, wearing tunic and maphorion, the left arm resting.
