Lot description: PHRYGIA. Amorion. 2nd-1st century BC. AE (Bronze, 20 mm, 6.78 g, 12 h), A[.]au..., Pole... and Klear..., magistrates. Laureate head of Zeus to right. Rev. A[.]-AY / [Π]ΟΛE / KΛEAP / ΑΜΟΡΙΑ-ΝΩΝ Eagle standing right on thunderbolt, with kerykeion over his left shoulder. BMC -, cf. 2 (without A[.]-AY). CNG E-Auction 259 (2011), 125. SNG Copenhagen -, cf. 113-116 (differing magistrates). A very rare variety. A lovely coin with a fine head of Zeus and a beautiful near black patina. Extremely fine. Ex Naumann 101, 4 April 2021, 266 (expertly cleaned since). Regrettably, the rendering of the second letter in the magistrate's name inscribed across the upper reverse field is rather crude. It resembles a clumsy C or Γ, but neither option is wholly convincing. Intriguingly, this letter is equally crude, if not more so, on the two other reverse dies known to this cataloguer.
