Lot description:

IONIA, Smyrna. Britannicus(?). AD 41-55. Æ Hemiassarion (16mm, 2.80 g, 1h). Philistos and Eikadios, magistrates. Struck circa AD 50-54. Bareheaded and draped bust right / Nike advancing right, carrying trophy over shoulder. Klose Type XXXI, 41 (V12/R36); RPC I 2476 (Nero as Caesar, under Claudius); SNG Copenhagen 1351; SNG von Aulock 7995. Brown patina, roughness. Near VF.

Ex Nomos Obolos 17 (20 December 2020), lot 450 (hammer 320 CHF).

The authors of RPC dispute Klose's identification of the head on this coin as Britannicus, favoring instead an identification of Nero. Without an inscription, either is possible.

Estimate: 100 USD
