Lot description: AKARNANIA, Leukas. Circa 320-280 BC. AR Stater (18.5mm, 7.99 g, 1h). Pegasos flying right, legs extended / Helmeted head of Athena right; to left, herm right, kerykeion, and Λ. Pegasi 102/1 (same obv. die[?]); Imhoof-Blumer, Akarnaniens 26; BCD Akarnania –; HGC 4, 823. Toned, some find patina, roughness, cleaning scratches. VF. Rare variety with Pegasos's legs extended. Unlike the standard variety, where Pegasos is depicted mid-flight with its legs dangling, here Pegasos is depicted with its legs fully extended, as if it had just leaped into the air. Although Pegasi includes one of this variety among the four examples for type 102, clearly this version of Pegasos should be classified as a different type. Estimate: 250 USD |
