In der hellenistischen Zeit – unter dem Seleukidenkönig Antiochos dem Großen (König von 223-187 v. Chr.) einsetzend – prägte Side eine enorme Menge an silbernen Tetradrachmen (Nr. 371-388). Sie wurden zu einer wichtigen Handelsmünze im östlichen Mittelmeerraum. Die Münzen zeigen auf der Vorderseite den Kopf der Athena (von Side), auf der Rückseite die Siegesgöttin Nike. Aus der Legende dieser Münzen ist nicht ersichtlich, dass Side der Münzherr ist. Einzig der Granatapfel, das Wappen Sides, weist auf die Münzstätte. Unter dem Granatapfel steht das Kürzel für den Beamten, der die Prägung überwacht hat. Die weite Verbreitung dieser Münzen und ihre Verwendung im Seleukidenreich wie in zahlreichen anderen Städten bezeugen die vielen Gegenstempel, die auf ihnen zu finden sind (zu diesen Münzen Leschhorn 1989; Meadows 2018, 204-209). Kaya Sayar hat eine Reihe von ihnen zusammengetragen. [JN] Wahrscheinlich steht der Gegenstempel mit den nach dem Frieden von Apameia (188 v. Chr.) vom Seleukiden Antiochos III. an den Attaliden Eumenes II. geleisteten Reparationszahlungen in Zusammenhang, die wohl nicht in seleukidischem Reichsgeld zu erbringen waren. Die Gegenstempelung fand wohl in den Jahren 188-183 v. Chr. statt. Siehe hierzu Bauslaugh, Robert, Cistophoric Countermarks and the Monetary System of Eumenes II, in: NC 150 (1990), S. 39 ff. und 45 (Zuweisung "Adramyttium"). In the Hellenistic period – beginning during the rule of the Seleucid king Antiochus the Great (who ruled from 223-187 BC) – Side minted an enormous quantity of silver tetradrachms (No. 371-388). They became important trade coins in the eastern Mediterranean. These coins show the head of Athena (of Side) on the obverse and the goddess of victory, Nike, on the reverse. It is not clear from the legend that Side is the minting authority. Only the pomegranate, Side's coat of arms, informs us as to where the specimens were minted. Below the pomegranate appears the abbreviated name of the magistrate who supervised the minting. The widespread distribution of these coins and their use in the Seleucid Empire as well as in numerous cities outside the empire is evidenced by the many counterstamps found on them (on these coins Leschhorn 1989; Meadows 2018, 204-209). Kaya Sayar collected a number of such pieces. [JN] It is likely that the countermark is connected to the reparation payments that the Seleucid ruler Antiochus III had to make to the Attalid ruler Eumenes II after the Treaty of Apamea (188 BC), which probably did not have to be paid in Seleucid imperial money. The countermark was probably created in the years between 188 and 183 BC. On this cf.
