| Lot description: LYCIA. Prä- und protodynastische Prägungen. Unbestimmter Dynast AR-Stater, 480/460 v. Chr., unbestimmte Münzstätte; 8,70 g. Sphinx sitzt r., eine Pranke erhoben//In Incusum: Perlquadrat, darin Krebs. Müseler III, 21 (dies Exemplar). RR Min. korrodiert, fast sehr schön Exemplar der Auktion Triton XIV, New York 2011, Nr. 333. Es handelt sich möglicherweise um eine Prägung des Dynasten Amartite. Die Exemplare der Sammlung Winsemann Falghera (Nr. 51; Nrn. 52 und 53 mit Sphinx l.) sowie die Exemplare der Bibliothèque nationale de France (http://catalogue.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/cb41794967d und http://catalogue.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/cb417949662) zeigen einen deutlich rauheren Stil, zudem fehlt das Perlquadrat und bei den Stücken in Paris befindet sich unter der Sphinx ein Buchstabe. Das Exemplar im British Museum (BMC 26) ist zwar von feinem Stil und zeigt auf dem Revers das Perlquadrat, jedoch weicht die Darstellung des Krebses deutlich ab. Die genannten Stücke sind zudem alle deutlich schwerer als das vorliegende Stück. Unser Stück dürfte mit einiger Wahrscheinlichkeit aus einer anderen Münzstätte stammen als die anderen genannten Statere des Typs Sphinx/Krebs. This could be an issue of the dynast Amartite. The specimens of the Winsemann Falghera Collection (No. 51; No. 52 and 53 with sphinx l.) as well as the specimens of the Bibliothèque nationale de France (http://catalogue.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/cb41794967d and http://catalogue.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/cb417949662) are of a distinctively rougher style; moreover, the pearl square is missing and the pieces in Paris display a letter beneath the sphinx. Although the specimen in the British Museum (BMC 26) is of fine style and does depict a pearl square on the reverse, its depiction of the crab is significantly different. In addition, the pieces mentioned above are all much heavier than the piece in question. It is very likely that our specimen is from another mint than the other mentioned staters of the sphinx/crab type. Estimate: 500 EUR |  |
