Wrestling: Grasping a leg

PAMPHYLIA. Aspendos. Circa 420-410 BC. Stater (Silver, 24 mm, 10.96 g, 1 h). Two wrestlers beginning to grapple with each other: the one on the right extends his left leg between his opponent's legs, grasps his belt with his left hand and his left shouldert with his right hand; the one on the left grasps his opponent's left leg with his own left hand - his right arm is obscure and there seems to be, going across the field between the two men, a second left arm whose hand grasps his opponent's belt; border of dots. Rev. ΕΣΤFΕΔΙΙΥΣ Slinger striding right, wearing a light garment the skirt of which swings behind him, preparing to launch sling-bolt; to right, triskeles moving anti-clockwise to left; all within square border of dots. SNG Paris 47. SNG von Aulock -. Tekin Series 1. Struck from the same obverse die as Nomos 27, 2023, 1099. Attractively toned. Struck from a worn obverse die, otherwise, good very fine.

Wrestling: Grasping a leg

PAMPHYLIA. Aspendos. Circa 420-410 BC. Stater (Silver, 25 mm, 10.95 g, 10 h). Two wrestlers beginning to grapple with each other, their feet are flat on the ground but their right feet are together: the righthand one grasps his opponent's belt with his right hand and his right wrist with his left; the lefthand wrestler grasps his opponent's right shoulder with his left hand and tries to grasp his right knee with his right. Rev. ΕΣΤΕΕ Slinger striding right, preparing to launch his sling-bolt; in the field to right, triskeles to right;. SNG von Aulock 4504 (same dies. A good, clear illustration of wrestlers shortly after the start of the match. Lightly toned. Good very fine.

Some early commentators thought the reverse letters were actually part of a magistrate's name, perhaps the Εστεε [Λαυδρου] known from other sources, but all later scholars have dismissed this theory.

LESBOS. Methymna. Circa 500/480-460 BC. Tetrobol (Silver, 13.5 mm, 2.33 g, 10 h). Hoplite, seen from behind, running to left, wearing a crested Corinthian helmet, holding a round shield over his left arm and a spear spear with his right hand. Rev. Rider on forepart of horse galloping to right; all in dotted square within incuse square. Franke, Münzprägung 4. HGC 6, 887. SNG von Aulock 1738. Rare. Well preserved and attractively toned. A few minor scratches on the obverse, otherwise, good very fine.
