The Bruttians, an ancient people of southern Italy, inhabited the region of Bruttium, known today as Calabria. They were deeply influenced by Greek colonization, absorbing Greek culture, language, and religious practices. Renowned for their martial prowess, the Bruttians were formidable warriors who fiercely defended their territory against neighboring Greek colonies and later against the expanding Roman Republic. Their involvement in the Pyrrhic War, siding with Pyrrhus of Epirus against Rome, showcased their strategic alliances and military capabilities. Despite initial successes, the Bruttians faced defeat alongside Pyrrhus, leading to gradual Roman conquest and assimilation. The Bruttians' legacy extends beyond their military endeavors. Their cultural contributions and interactions with Greek and Roman civilizations enriched the fabric of southern Italy. While assimilated into the Roman Republic, traces of Bruttian influence endure in the archaeological remains and local traditions of Calabria.
