ISLANDS off IONIA, Chios. temp. Trajan-Hadrian. AD 98-138. Æ Hemiassarion (16mm, 2.23 g, 9h). XIΩN, sphinx seated right, raising forepaw over bunch of grapes to right / HMIACCAPION, cantharus. Mavrogordato 110ε var. (paw over prow); Lagos Roman Series III, Group D, Type A var. (same); RPC III 1912 var. (same). Brown patina with earthen highlights, roughness. Good Fine. Extremely rare, unpublished.

Chios is one of the few ancient cities to name the denomination on its coins. Here, hemiassarion is spelled out on the reverse, trichalkon, dichalkon, and assarion are also known.
