Lot description:

LUCANIA, Sybaris. Circa 550-510 BC. AR Hemiobol(?) (9.5mm, 0.25 g, 10h). Bull standing left, head right; VM in exergue / Large M above V. Cf. S&S Class B, pl. 48, 12 (obol); cf. HN Italy 1739 (obol); CNG E-429, lot 17; CNG 109, lot 30. Toned, patches of find patina. VF. Rare.

Although this reverse type is only known on obols, and no hemiobols are previously known with this type, the weight is very low for the theoretical weight of 0.40 grams for an obol at this time. There are also no apparent pellets in the field on the reverse, which are canonical on the obols.

Estimate: 100 USD
