| Lot description: Marius and Alfius, circa 550-650. Seal (Lead, 25 mm, 8.85 g, 12 h). mA/RIU / ALF in three lines. Rev. Cruciform monogram of MAPIOV AΛΦIOV. Unpublished in the standard references. An intriguing bilingual Byzantine seal. Minor surface cracks, otherwise, good very fine. From a European collection, formed before 2005. The Latin legend on the obverse consists of the same letters as the Greek monogram on the reverse. Considering that both Marius and Alfius are Roman gentes, they are interpreted here as referring to a pair of individuals who issued this seal as a duo. Starting price: 50 CHF |  |
