Tetarteron (Electrum, 21 mm, 3.99 g, 6 h), Constantinopolis. + ΘKE R-OHΘ Nimbate bust of Virgin facing, wearing tunic and maphorion, holding with both hands medallion of the Infant Christ; in fields, MHP – ΘV. Rev. + MIXAHA S MAPIA Crowned facing busts of Michael VII, with short beard on the left and wearing loros and crown surmounted by cross with pendilia, and Maria on the right, wearing loros and crown surmounted by cross with pendilia, holding long cross with ornamented shaft between them. DOC 5. SB 1872. Scrapes and scratches and struck from worn dies, otherwise, very fine.


From an American collection, privately acquired from Ariadne Galleries prior to 1982, and reportedly acquired in a Peus sale in 1969.
