SASANIAN KINGS. Ardashir I, 223/4-240. Obol (Silver, 15 mm, 0.70 g, 4 h), Mint B (Hamadan), circa 233/4-238/9. MZDYSN BGY 'RTHŠTR MRKAN MRKA 'YR'N MNW CTRY MN YZD'N ('Worshipper of Lord Mazda, 'God' Ardashir, King of Kings of Iran who has lineage from the Gods' in Pahlawi) Draped bust of Ardashir I to right, wearing diadem and close-fitting headdress with korymbos and earflaps. Rev. NWRA ZY 'RTHŠTR ('Fire of Ardashir' in Pahlawi) Fire altar with diadems. SNS I, type IIIb(4a)/3b(2b). Sharply struck and nicely toned. Minor deposits, otherwise, about extremely fine.

Rev. Fire altar; to left and right, 'NWRA ZY ˗ ʾrthštr', i.e. 'ādur ī Ardaxšēr' ('Fire of Ardashir' in Pahlavi). Göbl type V/2. SNS I, type VII/3c. Rare. Heavily crystallized and corroded and with a flan crack, otherwise, very fine.
