Lot description: Licinius I BI Nummus. Arelate, AD 313. IMP C LICINIVS P F AVG, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust to right / S P Q R OPTIMO PRINCIPI, three standards surmounted by hand, eagle and wreath; QARL in exergue. RIC VII 10. 3.63g, 23mm, 12h. Good Very Fine; area of flatness. Extremely Rare; rated R5 in RIC and seemingly no examples on CoinArchives. The mint of Arelate was established after the mint at Ostia was transferred in circa AD 313. The continuity is illustrated by this reverse type which was seemingly struck only for a short time early on in the transition. (RIC VII, p.227) Estimate: 250 GBP |
