IMP TRAIANO AVG GER DAC P M TR P, laureate bust to right, slight drapery on far shoulder / COS V P P S P Q R OPTIMO PRINC, Danuvius reclining to left on rocks, hand on ship's prow; above, cloak floating, DANVVIVS in exergue. RIC II 100; BMCRE 395; Woytek 277b; RSC 136. 3.11g, 19mm, 8h.

Very Fine.

Danuvius is depicted here as the personification of the Danube River. A great natural obstacle, it was overcome in the reign of Trajan with the construction of a great bridge which was then (and continues to be) regarded as a marvel of engineering.
