Lot description: Alexius I Comnenus, with Irene and John II. 1081-1118. BI Aspron Trachy (26mm, 4.40 g, 6h). Constantinople mint. Struck 1092/3. Facing figures of John, wearing loros, holding labarum and globus cruciger, and Christ, crowning John and holding Gospels / Crowned facing figures of Alexius and Irene, each wearing loros and holding between them a long patriarchal cross; Alexius also holding akakia. DOC 24; SB 1916. Dark brown patina, light roughness. Good VF. Very rare coronation issue struck on the occasion of John's elevation. The finest example in CoinArchives. Estimate: 500 USD |
