JUDAEA, Herodians. Agrippa II, with Vespasian, circa 50-100 CE. AE (Bronze, 29 mm, 16.44 g, 12 h), Caesarea Paneas, RY 26 of Agrippa's first era = 74/5 . ΑΥΤΟΚΡΑ ΟΥΕϹ[ΠΑ ΚΑΙϹΑΡΙ ϹΕΒΑϹΤⲰ] Laureate head of Vespasian to right. Rev. ΕΤΟΥ-ΚϚ ΒΑ / ΑΓΡΙΠ-ΠΑ Tyche with kalathos standing left, holding two grain ears on her right hand and cornucopiae over her left shoulder. Hendin 1282a. Meshorer 158b. RPC II 2274. Very rare. Somewhat crudely struck with some deposits and minor pitting, otherwise, about very fine.


Privately acquired from C. J. Martin and from a British collection, formed before 2005.

Although this type is rather common, this variety, with its peculiar style and a large, energetic head of Vespasian, was previusly only known from 2 examples (Künker eLive 66 (2021), 224 = Künker 341 (2020), 6220 (Same collection) = Künker 270 (2015), 8693 = Sternberg 15 (1985), 151; and CNG E-Auction 306, 2013, 304). All three examples, including our coin, were struck from the same die pair.

Laureate head of Vespasian right / Tyche-Demeter standing left, wearing kalathos, holding grain ears and cornucopia; ETOV KϚ (date) in legend. Meshorer 159; Hendin 6313; RPC II 2274; Sofaer 227. Red-brown surfaces with light earthen highlights, reverse lamination flaw. Near VF. Rare variety with circular reverse legends.
