Cleopatra Thea, daughter of Ptolemy VI and Cleopatra II of Egypt, became entangled in the politics of the Seleucid Empire through her marriages. Initially wed to Alexander II Zabinas, a contender for the Seleucid throne, she faced upheaval when Zabinas lost the support of Ptolemy VIII. During this tumultuous period, she remarried to Demetrius II, a Seleucid king who faced challenges from rival claimants. After the death of Demetrius II, Cleopatra Thea sought to secure power for her children. She played a pivotal role in supporting her son Antiochus VIII Grypos against the claims of other contenders, including Zabinas. Cleopatra Thea's political maneuvers were marked by shifting allegiances as she navigated the complex web of Seleucid power struggles. Antiochus VIII Grypos, Cleopatra's son, eventually emerged victorious and became the ruler of the Seleucid Empire. However, this victory did not bring stability. The Seleucid Empire was weakened, and internal strife continued. Antiochus VIII faced challenges from rival factions, and his reign was marked by conflict and shifting alliances.
