Lot description: Central Italy, Uncertan. AE Aes Grave As 74 mm (84.15 g), 3rd century BC. Head of Hercules right, wearing lion's skin headdress. Reverse: Head of griffin right. ICC 271; HN Italy 353. Extremely Rare - wth just a few examples known. With a beautiful two-toned medium and light green patina. Choice Extremely Fine. Estimated Value $10,000 - UP The last example of this type that sold at auction was more than twenty years ago, in 2002 (see Leu Numismatik AG 83, 6 May 2002, 593, a lovely example but not as fine as ours, and which realized CHF 19,000, or approximately USD $11,925). Head of bearded Janus; no mark of value; all on a raised disk / Prow of galley right; I (mark of value) above; all on a raised disk. Crawford 35/1; ICC 75; Sydenham 72; HN Italy 337; RBW 84–5.
