Claudius I As, Hercules Head Countermark. 40-as; Claudius I As, Hercules Head Countermark; 41-54 AD, Rome, 42-54 AD, As, 8.66g. RIC-113. Obv: Head of Claudius bare l., legend ends with P P, Libertas Augusta S C reverse type, Rome-mint style; below Claudius' neck bearded head of Hercules in round countermark. Apparently a rare countermark, known to Howgego-13 = AMNG III-236 only on an AE 30 of the Macedonian Koinon in the Milan collection. The Martini Pangerl Collection-99 contains a sestertius of Claudius with the same countermark, whose reverse type is however corroded and illegible. A few other bronzes with this countermark may well have emerged from eastern Europe since the 1990s.Interesting countermark at 6 o'clock. Fine

Estimate: 350 USD
