Lot description: Sabina with MONETA AVG legend of Hadrian. Denarius; Sabina with MONETA AVG legend of Hadrian; Rome, 128-137 AD, Denarius, 3.32g. RIC-2574 (R3, citing a specimen in the Reka Devnia hoard); BMC-p. 361, (e), citing Cohen-47 (de Moustier, 20 Fr.); Strack-p. 227, 42 (citing Reka Devnia, Cohen, and a third spec. in Milan). Obv: SABINA - AVGVSTA Bust draped r., hair plait hanging behind neck. Rx: MONE - TA AVG Concordia standing l. leaning on column, holding patera and double cornucopia. Ex Curtis L. Clay Collection. This coin was meant to be a normal CONCORDIA AVG denarius of Sabina, e.g. BMC pl. 65.12, but the die engraver mistakenly put a doubtless contemporaneous legend of Hadrian's, MONETA AVG, on the reverse instead of the correct CONCORDIA AVG of Sabina. Further specimens may well show that there was only such mislabeled denarius reverse die of Sabina, combining her CONCORDIA AVG type with Hadrian's MONETA AVG legend.. aEF Estimate: 550 USD |
