Lot description:

Hadrian. Sestertius; Hadrian; 117-138 AD, Rome, c. 125-126/7 AD, Sestertius, 22.04g. RIC-824 (R2), pl. 90 (same rev. die); C-933 corr. (30 Fr.). Obv: HADRIANVS - AVGVSTVS Bust laureate r. with fold of cloak on front shoulder. Rx: [LIB]ERALIT[AS] / [AVG IIII] in two lines in exergue, [S - C] across lower field (mostly off flan on our specimen), Hadrian, togate, seated r. on curule chair on platform and extending r. hand; before him, Liberalitas standing r. pouring out coins from a cornucopia to a recipient standing l. on the ground; to r., a second recipient leaves the scene, having apparently just received his own gift of coins from Liberalitas. Ex Curtis L. Clay Collection; ex CNG E115, 25 May 2005, 402. An interesting variant because of the second recipient in the reverse type, and rare, with only one specimen in Garonne hoard. The authenticity of our specimen is not certain, however; it could be a modern cast.Exquisite surfaces. aVF / VF
