Hadrian Bronze Medallion. AE 33 medallion; Hadrian Bronze Medallion; 117-138 AD, Rome, 128-38 AD, Bronze Medallion, 40.60g. RIC-2884 (R2), pl. 211, (same dies); Mittag, Römische Medaillons, pl. 66, Hadr. 123.3 (this coin). Obv: IMP CAESAR HADRI - ANVS AVG COS III P P Laureate, mid-length torso seen from side, wearing large aegis which is fastened above the emperor's bare r. arm and falls both forward over his chest and behind over his back. Rx: COS III P P in small letters across lower field, Winged Victory in biga of horses prancing r. Ex Curtis L. Clay Collection; ex CNG 75, 23 May 2007, 1486; ex CNG 69, 8 June 2005, 2211; ex CNG 67, 22 Sept. 2004, Coll. Garth R. Drewry, 1472; ex Harmer-Rooke, 12 Dec. 1986, Coll. Harvey Hoffer, 949; ex R. Ratto, 26 Jan. 1955, Coll. G. Giorgi. Wrongly considered to be a Renaissance copy or a modern forgery by the three CNG catalogues; but the piece is clearly struck and is from the same dies as several other obviously authentic examples cited by RIC-2884 and Mittag. With an unusual almost half-length portrait of Hadrian wearing a large aegis over his otherwise naked shoulders. The reverse die is interesting because, two or more years later, Hadrian's titles COS III P P were removed by the mint and the die was reused on a medallion of Diva Faustina I; see Gnecchi pl. 59.4.. aEF
