From the collection of Leo Biaggi de Blasys (1906-1979), ex Münzen & Medaillen AG 13, 17 June 1954, 631, from the Riche Collection, Part I, Ratto, 12 May 1925, 759, and from the collections of Ernest John Seltman, Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge, 6-7 July 1921, 4 and M. H. Montagu, Rollin & Feuardent, 20-28 April 1896, 121.

While many Roman emperors minted quinarii, individual emissions seem to have been very small, as their rarity and the numerous die links indicate. Augustus minted silver quinarii until 21 BC, after which this unusual denomination was only struck in gold during the Julio-Claudian period. It was not until the civil war under Galba and Vitellius that silver quinarii reappeared, while gold quinarii thereafter became increasingly rare. Our gold quinarius of Tiberius was minted in his final year of reign and was one of only eight examples known to King in 2007.
