Lot description:
Attica, Athens, (166-57 B.C.), silver tetradrachm, (17.04 g), issued 143-2 B.C., (Thompson date), but probably 111-110 B.C. (revised chronology), obv. head of Athena Parthenos to right wearing triple-crested Athenian helmet, ornamented with Pegasus, rev. owl standing to right, head facing, in erect posture, on prostrate amphora, to right Artemis with torch, legend across A QE, FANO KLHS, to left downwards APOL/LWNI/OS; ASKL/APWN, ME below, K on amphora, all within wreath, (cf.S.2555, Thompson 707/706b [same dies], cf.Hunterian 137 [same obverse die], cf.SV.61 [same obverse die]). Nearly extremely fine and very rare.
Ex Patrick Cooper Collection and with his ticket, and acquired from CNG Triton VI, January 14, 2003 (lot 1596 part), previously from Glendinning, London, December 8, 1981 (lot 55).
