Lot description: City Commemorative Æ Mule 16mm. Contemporary Imitation(?) of type struck under Constantine I at Lugdunum, AD 330-331. CONSTANTINOLIS(sic), laureate and helmeted bust of Constantinopolis to left, holding sceptre / She-wolf standing to left, suckling twins; above, two stars; •PLG in exergue. For prototype cf. RIC VII 246/247 (for obv./rev.); cf. A. Marsden, "Contemporary Imitations of Constantine's Wolf & Twins Coinage" in Treasure Hunting, June-July 2001, p. 23-4, fig. 4 and 7. 1.67g, 16mm, 4h. Near Extremely Fine. Ex Roma Numismatics Ltd., E-Sale 104, 15 December 2022, lot 1442; Ex Roma Numismatics Ltd., E-Sale 86, 8 July 2021, lot 1485. The obverse legend error, erroneous pairing of dies and style of the wolf on the reverse all point to this coin being a contemporary imitation, perhaps linked to Marsden's Mint IV in A. Marsden, "Contemporary Imitations of Constantine's Wolf & Twins Coinage" in Treasure Hunting, June-July 2001, p. 30. Estimate: 125 GBP |
