PHRYGIA. Amorion. 2nd-1st century BC. AE (Bronze, 20 mm, 6.78 g, 12 h), A[.]au..., Pole... and Klear..., magistrates. Laureate head of Zeus to right. Rev. A[.]-AY / [Π]ΟΛE / KΛEAP / ΑΜΟΡΙΑ-ΝΩΝ Eagle standing right on thunderbolt, with kerykeion over his left shoulder. BMC -, cf. 2 (without A[.]-AY). CNG E-Auction 259 (2011), 125. SNG Copenhagen -, cf. 113-116 (differing magistrates). A very rare variety. A lovely coin with a fine head of Zeus and a beautiful near black patina. Extremely fine.

Ex Naumann 101, 4 April 2021, 266 (expertly cleaned since).

Regrettably, the rendering of the second letter in the magistrate's name inscribed across the upper reverse field is rather crude. It resembles a clumsy C or Γ, but neither option is wholly convincing. Intriguingly, this letter is equally crude, if not more so, on the two other reverse dies known to this cataloguer.

Estimate: 350 CHF

PHRYGIA, GALATIA OR CILICIA. Uncertain. 1st century BC. AE (Bronze, 22 mm, 7.05 g, 12 h). Laureate head of Zeus to right. Rev. Eagle with spread wings alighting left on thunderbolt; in fields, caps of the Dioscuri surmounted by stars (erased). Cf. Obolos 24 (2022), 233 (Tarkondimotos). RPC I -. SNG Levante -. SNG Paris -. Apparently unpublished and very unusual. The reverse struck slightly off center, otherwise, good very fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

Stylistically, this unusual coin is reminiscent of issues of the Galatian king Deiotaros or the Cilician king Tarkondimotos, but it does not carry any legends. Furthermore, the reverse is clearly derived from civic bronzes from Apameia in Phrygia, but the caps of the Dioscuri were erased from the die.

Starting price: 50 CHF

Lot description:

Lykia, Choma Æ 16mm. Circa 1st century BC. Laureate head of Zeus to right / Kakasbos, helmeted, riding horse galloping to right, his chlamys floating behind him, brandishing club in raised right hand. SNG von Aulock 4287-8; BMC 1 var. (Zeus to left). 3.89g, 16mm, 12h.

Near Very Fine. Extremely Rare mint.

Kakasbos, an Anatolian rider-god, was represented on a large number of rock-cut and slab reliefs from northern Lykia and Pisidia. The name Kakasbos is known from numerous inscriptions. The male figure is always shown on horseback, facing frontally with an upraised club. He wears a short tunic (chiton), a travellers cloak (chlamys), and either boots or sandals on his feet. The club associates Kakasbos with the Greek hero Herakles, and on some examples the horseman figure is named Herakles by inscription. Kakasbos should be related to similar divinities known throughout the Graeco-Roman world, such as the Thracian horseman. Another set of horsemen reliefs from Tyriaion, near Balboura, identifies a club-bearing rider-god on his galloping mount as Maseis. Other indigenous rider-god cults known from this region include Mên and Sozon, whose attributes associate them with the moon and sun.
