SICILY. Akragas. AR Didrachm (8.84 gms), ca. 488/85-480/78 B.C. NGC Ch EF, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 4/5. Overstruck.
HGC-2, 94; Westermark-Group III, 217 (O76/R143). Obverse: Sea eagle standing left; Reverse: Crab within incuse circle. Very well centered, especially upon the reverse, this enchanting example possesses intricate engraving imparted unto each side, and makes the lack of a fine style designation somewhat puzzling. Adding to its flair that much more is a great deal of lustrous brilliance and a golden-olive tone accentuating and off-setting the crab on the reverse. Undoubtedly a premium-quality example of the type.

Ex: Stock of Egon Beckenbauer, May 1968.

Estimate: $3500 - $4500
