Seated majestically on the island's north-western front and presenting an awe-inspiring vista of the Mediterranean, Marion was a focal point of Hellenic culture and influence. Its geographical advantage further-endowed its significance, as it lay at the crossroads of key maritime routes, becoming a hub for trade and cultural exchange. Marion flourished notably in the Archaic and Classical periods, its prosperity reflecting the city's position as a vital trading center, dealing in timber, copper, precious metals, and other commodities to the Aegean world and beyond. Marion's coinage was also significant, bearing the typology of animals such as lions, stags, rams, and bulls. Despite its turbulent history, particularly its ultimate destruction by Ptolemaic Egypt in the late 4th century BC, and subsequent re-founding as Arsinoe, Marion's intrinsic legacy remains. Archaeological findings, including temple remains, funerary monuments, and inscriptions, offer profound insights into its distinct socio-political dynamics and cultural narratives, breathing life into the city's ancient stones.

ARABIA PETRAEA. Bostra. Trajan (AD 98-117). AR tridrachm (23mm, 10.57 gm, 7h). NGC Choice XF 5/5 - 4/5, Fine Style. Dated Consular Year 6 (ca. AD 112-114). ΑΥΤΟΚΡ ΚΑΙC ΝЄΡ ΤΡΑΙΑΝΟC CЄΒ ΓЄΡΜ ΔΑΚ, laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Trajan right, seen from front / ΔΗΜΑΡΧ ЄΞ ΥΠΑΤΟ Ϛ, aquila between two standards; left standard surmounted and right surmounted by hand. RPC III 4062A. The holder notes that this could also be from Caesarea Cappadocia. A brilliant Fine Style piece, showcasing meticulous attention to the portrait of Trajan and the intricate details of his clothing, highlighting the exceptional craftsmanship involved.

Marcus Ulpius Trajanus, better known as Trajan, carved his name in history as one of ancient Rome's most illustrious emperors, renowned for his military prowess and strategic brilliance. Born the son of a prominent Roman senator under the reign of Vespasian, Trajan followed his father's career in provincial military administration. Having just received the title Germanicus from his exploits at the Germanic frontier, Trajan ascended to power in AD 98 with the death of the elderly Emperor Nerva. Under Trajan the Roman Empire reached its greatest territorial extent, encompassing vast swathes of land across Europe, Asia, and Africa. His military campaigns, particularly the Dacian Wars, secured valuable resources and strategic advantages for the empire. Trajan's conquests also extended into the Middle East, where he captured territories such as Armenia and Mesopotamia, further consolidating Roman influence in the region. Beyond his military achievements, Trajan was renowned for his benevolent governance and commitment to public welfare. He implemented extensive building projects, including the construction of roads, bridges, and aqueducts, which facilitated trade and communication throughout the empire, while also completing iconic landmarks such as Trajan's Column and Trajan's Forum in Rome, showcasing his enduring legacy as a patron of architecture and urban development. Trajan's reign is remembered as achieving the heights of the golden age of the Roman Empire, characterized by stability, prosperity, and imperial expansion. The Senate conferred onto him the title of "Best" (Optimus) and and future emperors would be inaugurated with the phrase that they be "luckier than Augustus, better than Trajan" (Felicior Augusto, melior Traiano).

Tiberius, as Augustus (AD 14-37). AR denarius (19mm, 3.76 gm, 4h). NGC Choice XF 4/5 - 4/5. Lugdunum, ca. AD 14-17. TI CAESAR DIVI-AVG F AVGVSTVS, laureate head of Tiberius right / PONTIF-MAXIM, Livia, as Pax, seated right, feet on stool, grounded scepter in right hand, olive branch raised in left; chair with ornate legs, single line below. RIC I 30. Handsomely toned example.

The son of Augustus' wife Livia by her previous marriage to a member of the aristocratic Claudian family, Tiberius Claudius Nero was born in 42 BC in the waning days of the Roman Republic. His path to supreme power was too circuitous to relate here, but upon the death of Augustus in AD 14, Tiberius was a weary 54-year-old who didn't truly want the job of emperor anymore. Nevertheless, Tiberius' first years as emperor went fairly smoothly, marred only by the death of the popular Germanicus in AD 19. Still, Tiberius longed to leave the hubbub of Rome behind. He attempted to retire in stages, giving more and more power to his unscrupulous Praetorian Prefect Sejanus, who plotted the arrests and murders of nearly the whole Julio-Claudian family. Heartsick and tired of intrigues, Tiberius retired permanently to the luxurious island retreat of Capri in AD 27, allowing Sejanus to run wild and destroy himself by overreaching. Tiberius died embittered and unloved in AD 37, leaving the succession to his deranged nephew Gaius 'Caligula,' perhaps as a cruel joke on the Roman people. It is unlikely he ever knew about the most momentous event of his reign, the ministry and crucifixion of Jesus Christ in Judea. Like Tiberius himself, his coinage was intensely conservative, with only a single precious metal type in use for almost the entirety of his 23-year reign. The reverse is commonly thought to depict his mother Livia in the guise of the goddess Pax, holding an olive branch and scepter.

BITHYNIAN KINGDOM. Prusias I (ca. 230-182 BC). AR tetradrachm (33mm, 17.01 gm, 12h). NGC Choice XF 5/5 - 4/5, Fine Style. Diademed head of Prusias I right / ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ / ΠΡΟΥΣΙΟΥ, Zeus standing facing, head left, crowning royal name with diadem in right hand, grounded scepter in left; thunderbolt above ME monogram above ANΣ monogram in inner left field. Waddington 9b. Jameson 1387. SNG von Aulock 6878. Cleanly struck with sharp and delicate devices on a broad flan.

Even before the Wars of Diadochi had concluded, the region of Bithynia in Asia Minor along the southern coast of the Black Sea had declared its independence from the vast realms ruled by Alexander's successors. Bithynia's kings were part of a native dynasty descended from two Thracian tribes that occupied the region centuries earlier, with admixture of royal Persian blood. Of the early dynasts, Zipoetres, Nicomedes I, and Ziaelas, we know comparatively little, except their evident love for war and plunder. Prusias I, the fourth independent king of Bithynia, was celebrated for his love of Greek culture and his ability to maintain his kingdom's power and prosperity during a time of turmoil in the Hellenistic world. He successfully conducted wars against the Galatians and the Attalid Kingdom of Pergamum, the latter with the help of the great Carthaginian General Hannibal. However, after first granting Hannibal refuge, Prusias was forced to give him up to the Romans, who demanded his surrender; Hannibal took poison in response. The portrait coins of Prusias are among the finest of the Hellenistic series, depicting him with a luxuriant set of chin-whiskers and a self-satisfied smirk.
