Ex Roma Numismatics, Auction XX (29 October 2020), lot 529. This outstanding aureus displays the succession arrangements Augustus hoped to implement for the Roman state. After the death of his favorite nephew Marcellus, Augustus turned his hopes for the succession to the young Caius and Lucius Caesars, his grandsons via his daughter Julia and his close friend Marcus Agrippa. Caius was born in 20 BC and Lucius three years later. Augustus formally adopted them both and gave them an accelerated progress up the cursus honorum, or ladder of public offices. He also carefully supervised their education and displayed them at public events to endear them to the populace and army. There are hints that being showered with honors and adulation may have gone to their heads, but history will never know whether their reigns would have been superior to what did come after Augustus, for they both suffered untimely ends. Lucius fell ill during a state visit to Gaul and died in Massalia in AD 2. Two years later, Caius suffered a wound during a skirmish with the Parthians on the eastern frontier and died in Lycia. Augustus was devastated and spent the rest of his reign sunk in depression. Augustus minted this series coins in both gold and silver as a way to introduce the world to his beloved grandsons, adopted sons, and heirs apparent, Lucius and Gaius. These coins were part of Augustus' effort to secure a dynastic succession. However, fate had other plans as both Lucius and Gaius predeceased him, with Lucius dying in AD 2 and Gaius in AD 4, events that deeply saddened Augustus. AVGVSTVS-DIVI•F, bare head of Augustus right / IMP•X•, bull charging right, head lowered, left foreleg raised, lashing his tail. Calicó 212. RIC I 166a. Ex Chaponnière & Firmenich, Auction 8 (5 July 2017), lot 40; Numismatica Genevensis, Auction 4 (11 December 2006), lot 151. Augustus' large "bull coinage" struck at the Gallic mint of Lugdunum came at a time of aggressive expansion for the regime. The bull is a visual reference to the city of Thurium in Lucania, to which Octavian's household had a strong connection. While serving as Praetor, the father of Octavian, Gaius Octavius, led Roman forces to victory over a band of rebel slaves near Thurium in 60 BC. Probably in commemoration of this Victory, Octavius bestowed on his then three-year-old son the cognomen Thurinus. Calicó 174. RIC I 198. Wonderful amber toning. Already planning ahead for his succession, in 8 BC Augustus introduced his twelve-year-old grandson and adopted son Gaius Caesar to the Roman army in Gaul. Gaius subsequently accompanied the future emperor Tiberius on campaign against the Sicambri on the Rhine frontier, and two years later he became Rome's youngest consul to date at the age of 14. The bulla around Gaius' neck signifies that he was still a child and had not yet assumed the toga of manhood (J.
